NOTE: If you want to check the free live musicality masterclass on the topic: ‘Mastering Tango Musicality: 4 Secrets To More Creative Dancing’ you can do it here.
As I promised you, I started attending online musicality courses, and this is my review on one of them, in case you are interested.
I did that for a few reasons:
Often, I felt stuck in my head, thinking about the steps, instead of being in the flow of the music. Other times I was trying and failing to ‘anticipate’ what comes next in a song, and more often than I am willing to admit, I felt confused by the music. Too often my partners were feeling the same way. And it is very hard to create a wonderful dance if both dancers don´t understand the music. As a leader, I know how memorable it is to dance with a follower that understands the music and helps me create a better dance. And, yes, I´ll admit that I, as many others before me, often assumed that because I have an intuitive knowledge of musicality I didn’t need to learn or study it.
But at one point I said enough it’s enough. I put my ego on the side, and although technically I was pretty good, I decided to admit that musically I was behind. I wanted to deepen my understanding of tango music and express it more fluidly on the dance floor.
Also, I wanted to help those of you who want to do the same understand what to expect from each course that I watched.
Today, I´ll share with you my experience with The Complete Tango Musicality Formula.
Pablo and Anne, the instructors, will only allow access to the course in a few days (beginning of November 2024) and the registrations will only last for a few days more.
If my review catches your interest, the next step will be to join one of their upcoming free live musicality masterclass on the topic: ´Mastering Tango Musicality: 4 Secrets To More Creative Dancing´. I’ll explain about it at the end.
Before that, let me share with you about:
My experience with The Complete Tango Musicality Formula:
The course is packed with in-depth lessons that cover all the essential elements of tango musicality, from rhythm, melody, and phrasing to dynamics and timing. Once I understood those elements, I moved to the second part of the course, where they explored the 3 musical styles – Guardia Vieja, Milonguero style and finally Tango Salon. Then, I moved to key orchestras like Di Sarli, Pugliese, D’Arienzo, and Troilo. What was particularly helpful for me was how the course combined theory with real-life application, showing how to interpret and dance to the distinct musical styles of each orchestra.
The class is taught by Pablo and Anne, who have over 28 years of tango teaching experience between them. I found their teaching style accessible, and the language easy to understand. English is my second language, so it’s hard for me when the instructors use big words. I enjoyed that the course doesn’t just talk about musicality—it shows you how to live it on the dance floor with clear, practical demonstrations and exercises. From mastering the rhythmic base to playing with counter melodies, Pablo and Anne guide you through the nuances of tango music. They provide valuable insight into how to make your dancing more dynamic and engaging.
One of the standout features of The Complete Tango Musicality Formula is its focus on making my life easy.
First, I could download the transcripts of each class so I didn’t have to take notes.
Second, most classes come with a downloadable checklist with the most important points. This way I could review fast the information of classes I already watched without having to re-watch each video.
At the end of each module there was a short quiz for me to check my understanding.
The accompanying downloadable playlists and song recommendations were very helpful too. They made my life easier when I wanted to simply sit back and listen to some tango music that was related to the class. It is true that you can learn a few things about tango musicality simply by listening, but having a curated list of songs to listen to really is a great way to keep developing your musical ear.
I watched the course before the official launch, so I didn’t have the chance to participate in the live Q&A sessions that you will have access to for further clarification and deeper exploration of topics, but Pablo and Anne gave me access to recorded Q&A sessions from last year, which were indeed full of clarifications and interesting questions.
There was one more thing that truly stood out for me: Each person learns differently. Some of us learn better by listening, some by watching and some by doing. Pablo and Anne catered to all those learning styles.
In terms of value, this course truly delivered. It included eight comprehensive modules, special playlists, and several bonuses like live Q&A sessions and additional training. With the added convenience of downloadable resources and lifetime access, the course helped me improve my confidence, creativity, and musical expression.
If you want to develop your musicality and maybe don´t know Anne and Pablo yet, I would recommend you to attend their musicality masterclass ‘Mastering Tango Musicality: 4 Secrets To More Creative Dancing’ in November. Just book your spot and see for yourself.
P.S. During the masterclass they’ll share the link to the course. I’ll also inform you on my newsletter and my social media.
